Graduate certificate in organizational communication
As of September 2008, the Department of Communication will offer a graduate certificate in organizational communication.
This new certificate program focuses on the mechanisms of internal and external communication in private and public organizations. Teaching and research issues can relate to topics such as group and interpersonal interactions, media relations and new communication and information technologies. Organizations studied may function at the local, regional, national or international levels.
The program is intended to meet the needs of qualified students who plan to apply the concepts learned in a practical context. The knowledge acquired in the program will facilitate student effective functioning in organizations and give them additional tools to advance in their careers.
The program is governed by the general regulations of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (FGPS).

Admission requirements
Candidates must have an Honours BA in communication (or the equivalent) with a minimum 70 per cent average (B). If candidates do not have the necessary background in communication, they may be asked to take additional courses. Students registered in the graduate certificate in organizational communication can request a transfer to the MA in communication or a related master’s program in accordance with regulation 7.1 of the general regulations of the FGPS.
Language of instruction
The certificate is offered in both English and French. Candidates must understand, speak and write either English or French fluently.
Degree requirements
The certificate program requires 15 credits of course work.

Theories and applications relevant to promotional communication campaigns. Strategies and techniques used in public communication campaigns. Case studies in the areas of health, environment, and other public domains.

Methods of analysis and measurement for the evaluation of information campaigns. Qualitative and quantitative methodologies. Case studies.
CMN5130 Intercultural Communication Theories (3 cr.)
Verbal and nonverbal communication between and among individuals, groups, and nations that are ethnically and racially diverse. Theoretical constructs examined include: value orientations in intercultural encounters, relationship development, intercultural adaptation, and intercultural communication competence, examined within the context of Canada's multicultural character and role as a global actor.
CMN5145 Alternative Communication Practices in Conflict Resolution in Organizations (3 cr.)
Trends in conflict resolution in dynamic organizations. Study of mediation, arbitration and conciliation among international and national organizations, governments, interest groups and individuals within organizations. Development of conflict resolution techniques.
CMN5150 Knowledge-based Economy and Communication Networks (3 cr.)
Analysis of new forms of access to knowledge derived from the use of new information and communication technologies. Study of transformations in production and distribution of knowledge. New ways of thinking and acting arising from the knowledge-based economy. Case studies from the work place, education and cultural industries.
CMN5155 Advanced Research in Traditional and Emerging Media (3 cr.)
Empirical and critical studies of traditional and emerging media in various social contexts: organizational, domestic, educational, etc. Emerging research trends (qualitative and quantitative).
CMN 5160 Political Uses of New Media (3 cr.)
Uses of new media by governments and social and political actors in building image, communicating to their publics, influencing public and policy agendas, and monitoring public opinion. Uses by the civil society (non-governmental organizations, activist groups and citizens) in its efforts to affect social and political change and to build networks of resistance. Policy issues related to political communication over the Internet (e.g., censorship, freedom of speech, and hate speech). Case studies.
CMN 5170 International Communication (3 cr.)
Contemporary approaches to international communication. The role of traditional and new media, international institutions, governmental agencies, NGOs. Specific analysis of problems such as participatory communication and alternative models.
